St Michael’s School in Llanelli, a CATS Global School, is celebrating after receiving a glowing report following its recent Estyn inspection.
Funded by the Welsh Government, Estyn is the body that inspects quality and standards in education and training providers in Wales. The word Estyn means ‘to reach out’ and ‘to stretch’ in Welsh.
Providing education for pupils aged three to 18 years, St Michael’s School currently has 424 pupils on its roll. Estyn described the school as “a small, close-knit, family community where staff take pride in developing pupils’ skills.”
“Our inspection report demonstrates the consistently high-quality education at St. Michael’s, delivered in an environment where family values take centre stage.”

Headteacher, St Michael’s School
The report praised pupils saying they “are confident and capable learners” and the “standards achieved by pupils are extremely high,” with a particular strength “in public examinations in mathematics and the sciences.”
The report adds that “across the school, pupils have strong working relationships with staff and this contributes to their positive attitudes to learning and exemplary behaviour.”
The attitude and professionalism of the teachers were also recognised, with Estyn noting teachers “have high expectations of themselves and their pupils.”
In addition to the “extremely high academic standards”, Estyn highlighted that the “digital skills of nearly all pupils have developed suitably due to the effective provision made by the school during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Headteacher, Benson Ferrari, who has been in post since 2017, said:
“Our inspection report demonstrates the consistently high-quality education at St. Michael’s, delivered in an environment where family values take centre stage.
“I want to thank all our staff and pupils who spoke to inspectors and shared their work. It was a very thorough evaluation of what our school does and shows the transformational journey that the school has been on over the past five years, where our continuing development is down to the hard work of all staff.”
The report concludes St Michael’s School meets all the Independent School Standards (Wales) Regulations 2003.
